California Dreamin'

Our first vacation with three little kids- quite an adventure!  We were fortunate to be able to spend a few days on the beach.  The boys had a ball, Avi endured it (or maybe we endured her ;)), I loved the cool moist air and Michael got to surf.  All in all it was a success, although I do not recommend vacationing with a four month old.  Michael and I agreed that next time we'll do a mini vacay just the two of us and enjoy some silence!  Here are pics... warning- lots!Hanging at the Malibu Country Mart... my favorite hang out :)
Dylan loves holding his baby sis.
Mommy and Avi
Avi's first time in the sandy-box (as the boys call it)
The view out our hotel balcony... loved it!
Happy surfer boy
Early morning overlooking the water
Soren found this HUGE sandbox and loved it!  Dylan and Michael in the background headed out to surf.

Dylan at the pool.  This pool was so kid friendly with three water slides and a kid jacuzzi.
The boys spent most of their time on the balcony.  There was a wedding going on below and unfortunately for the couple, their honey moon suite was right next store to us.  Excellent birth control.  Soren told me he wanted me to dress like a princess that day so he could marry me... warms my heart.  Then he proceeded to try to pee off the balcony onto the wedding party.
The La Brea Tar Pits... a place I always wanted to take the boys.  They loved checking out all of the dino bones.  Dylan said, "Mommy, I hope I never get stuck in tar".  He's had lots of little worries lately... killer bees, volcanos, poison ivy... why does God make these things???  I wish I knew!
Trying to pull the stick out of the tar... almost got it ;)

Happy Campers

We are so fortunate to have such great friends and friends that don't mind sharing their comfy cabin in the woods :)  This past weekend we were able to get away from it all with the Callahan's, the Meyer's and the owners of the cabin- the Henkenius family.  Such a treat!
BJ and one month old baby Ellen Paige

S'mores!!!!!  Soren was so excited to make the s'mores, but then realized he didn't like the goo.  You take it Daddy.
But I sure do LOVE the chocolate :)
Heather and Avi- stranger danger has set in
The kids!  Avi tried to jump in there.  She got mad at me when I politely asked her to get down!
Malia, Anna, Soren, Hailey, Chloe, Dylan and Carson.  They had a ball!  Soren's thinking about it.
Watch out world!  This says it all!  Dylan's holding up the dead crayfish he found.  NO MORE CRAYFISH in the house please.

We had great weekend away from TV, phone, computer and laundry :)   I think I need weekends like this more often... how about weeks like this more often??

Great News!!

We are sticking around!  Pretty much the second I posted the last post we got wonderful news about Michael's job.  It's finally all coming together.  I am thrilled to be staying in my little town, in my little house, with my little kids!  Speaking of little kids, they are growing big fast.  Avi is now 3 1/2 months and rolling over, smiling, laughing, spitting (we think it's very clever), doing lots of tummy time, playing with "Pinky" her first dolly.  Soren is starting preschool in 1 month!  I can hardly believe it and he's been surprising me quite a bit lately with what he really knows.  This little man has had us fooled now for most of his life, but we aren't falling for it anymore.  He knows exactly what's going on and especially knows how to egg on Dylan... he's almost becoming a bad influence on his big brother!  Still, he's our most snuggley snuggle bug and as sweet as pie (99.9 % of the time ;)).  Dylan will be a big 1st grader in a month and for now is enjoying building massive, complex cities and machines with Legos, I swear he has an engineer mind.  He's playing soccer and says he likes it, although I'm guessing what he really loves are the junky snacks they have after each game.  Both boys did swim lessons this summer and really improved and both did a week long summer camp and learned some hip-hop moves!  We are headed for a quick vacation soon for a little R & R and SURFING!!!!  We are super excited.  I'll post new pics. soon... stay tuned :)

What To Do, What To Do, What To Do

So, I haven't posted in awhile.  Things have been a little hectic.  Michael's job is going through some changes and we are feeling like we are stuck between a rock and a hard place with no easy answers in sight.  Like many people we bought our home at the peak of housing prices and although a move is not imminent, we have a lot of what-ifs in the back of our minds.  Stay and risk the job situation not turning out as expected and then what? or go and risk regretting a move from a place we are so in love with?  Here we have family close by, amazing friendships, a wonderful school and neighborhood and we love the friendly community, but do we risk our financial situation to retain those things?  Where's the book with the ANSWERS?  Anyone?  Advice welcome!

Boo Boos, Bows and Birthdays

It's rough being six!  Dylan has accumulated all of these boo boos in just the past week.  One bike crash and one skateboarding crash.  He's a pretty tough kid though, and loves showing off his battle wounds.
Foot got caught in the storm drain... luckily he didn't break it!
Road rash from a skateboard crash.  I think he kind of likes his new look ;)
Now onto something much prettier... is that the cutest bow you ever saw or what?  A gift from one of Dylan's teachers.  So sweet!
And last, but not least... Happy Birthday Daddy!!!!!  Michael turned the big 44 yesterday.  He got the afternoon to relax and then pizza and cake for dinner.  What more could you ask for? He had a great day!  We love you honey!

If This Could Only Be Imprinted On My Brain...

On Being Mom by Anna Quindlen

If not for the photographs, I might have a hard time
believing they ever existed. The pensive infant with
the swipe of dark bangs and the black button eyes of a
Raggedy Andy doll. The placid baby with the yellow
ringlets and the high piping voice. The sturdy toddler
with the lower lip that curled into an apostrophe
above her chin. ALL MY BABIES are gone now.

I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief. I take
great satisfaction in what I have today: three
almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in
fast. Three people who read the same books I do and
have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me
in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar
jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who
need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want
to keep their doors closed more than I like.

Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their
jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by
themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the
bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby
is buried deep within each, barely discernible except
through the unreliable haze of the past.

Everything in all the books I once pored over is
finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry
Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and
sleeping through the night and early-childhood
education, all grown obsolete.

Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things
Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I
suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise
like memories.

What those books taught me, finally, and what the
women on the playground taught me, and the
well-meaning relations –what they taught me was that
they couldn’t really teach me very much at all.
Raising children is presented at first as a true-false
test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far
along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one
knows anything. One child responds well to positive
reinforcement, another can be managed only with a
stern voice and a timeout. One boy is toilet trained
at 3, his brother at 2.

When my first child was born, parents were told to put
baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on
his own spit- up. By the time my last arrived, babies
were put down on their backs because of research on
sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this
ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then
soothing.

Eventually you must learn to trust yourself.
Eventually the research will follow.

I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr.
Brazelton’s wonderful books on child development, in
which he describes three different sorts of infants:
average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a
sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month-old who did not
walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little
legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little
mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically
challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China.
Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine.
He can walk, too.

Every part of raising children is humbling, too.
Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been
enshrined in the Remember-When-Mom-Did Hall of Fame.
The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language,
mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed.
The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The
nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day
when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom
with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, What
did you get wrong? (She insisted I include that.) The
time I ordered food at the McDonald’s drive-through
speaker and then drove away without picking it up from
the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did
not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two
seasons.

What was I thinking?

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of
us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment
enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment
is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one
picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a
quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day,
ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we
ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded,
and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish
I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next
thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured
the doing a little more and the getting it done a
little less.

Even today I’m not sure what worked and what didn’t,
what was me and what was simply life. When they were
very small, I suppose I thought someday they would
become who they were because of what I’d done. Now I
suspect they simply grew into their true selves
because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back
off and let them be.

The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense,
matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top. And
look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three
people I like best in the world, who have done more
than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That’s
what the books never told me. I was bound and
determined to learn from the experts.

It just took me a while to figure out who the experts
were.

Words For My Daughter

I have always loved this quote by Audrey Hepburn.  I hope to share these words of wisdom with my Avi when she is older... so simple and so true.

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone." -

School Play

It's official-  We have a kindergarten graduate in the family!  To finish off the year Dylan's class along with the forth graders did a wonderful little play about saving a tree.  They put so much work into it, memorizing their lines and all of the choreography.  We were so proud!
Here they are performing.  Notice Dylan has a female admirer.
Dylan's mask he designed.  He played the part of a bird and a small boy.  The small boy part he was on stage all alone.  It was a special part and he did great.  No stage fright!
Our little Dancing Bird

This year has flown by.  I'm really sad to be leaving Ms. K's class.  She was a phenomenal teacher and I will truly miss her.  Dylan has learned so much.  He's doing math, reading, writing and completed some science projects this year.  We are ready for first grade, but will miss his sweet kindergarten class.  Happy graduation Dylan!

Memorial Day Creekside

Our beautiful hike by the creek ended abruptly that day due to a thunderstorm, but the kids loved it and we soaked up every minute.  It was Gorgeous!  Dylan's is hiking in my nursing cover after getting soaked in the water.  Who knew those things were so versatile?
Our little adventurer testing the plant life along the way.
That's the face of a happy boy.  They always seem to be at their best when they can just run free outdoors.  Makes me want to homeschool... almost ;-)
Little Avi hiking with Daddy.  She was not in the mood that day.  She was lucky the storm shortened our day.  The rest of us could've stayed and played forever.
This was the only time Soren stopped long enough from his busy bug catching schedule for me to snap a picture.  What a cutie!

Memorial weekend was spent mainly at home watching thunderstorms roll in.  It was nice to take a short drive and have a little adventure to finish the weekend off.

What Gets Me Through...

(First verse of Come Come Ye Saints)
Come, come, ye saints, no toil nor labor fear;
But with joy, wend your way.
Though hard to you this journey may appear,
Grace shall be as your day.
’Tis better far for us to strive
Our useless cares from us to drive;
Do this, and joy your hearts will swell
All is well! All is well!

Even though I am inactive LDS, the songs I grew up singing in church have become the soundtrack to my day.  They are what get me through life and I am SO grateful I have such wonderful words of wisdom to fall back on when the days are long.  I think of the pioneer women coming across the plains, losing babies, being hungry, sick and cold and I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this life.  No matter what challenges we face we are all extremely blessed.  I always think of the song "Come Come Ye Saints" when I think of my ancestors and their determination and optimism.  I also love "Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel"... Put your shoulder to the wheel, move along, do your duty with a heart full of song... and "Love is Spoken Here" when I'm feeling not especially loving!

Spring Has Sprung

We have had double our average rainfall for the month of May and our garden is loving it.  Right now we have several varieties of tomatoes, two types of basil (I love caprese salad), corn, cilantro (for homemade salsa, yum!), lots and lots of berries, pumpkins and herbs.  Should be a delicious summer :-)
With all of the rain we've had there are now mushrooms popping up everywhere.  Don't worry, the boys promised they would not eat them!
None of our trees bloomed this year again due to frost.  We didn't know when we bought three big trees that the flowering trees only bloom every few years.  I guess conditions have to be just right, unless they are old and well established.  So, our little flower planters around the house will have to do to make it look somewhat spring-ish.  Luckily, all this rain has made things suddenly take off!

Squeaky Clean

Two shiney faces.  They love to snuggle up in our bed under the covers after their bath.
Chunky little Avi wiggling in her bath... she's definitely got her Mama's thighs!  I wish I could have captured her smile, but anyone with a six week old knows that's nearly impossible!
I love her expression here.  Seriously Mama?

Willy Philly

My little brother came through town with his band and we were able to see him for an hour before he had to go perform.  It was so great to see him.  I only wish we had more time!  We both agreed we'd like to trade lives with each other, but only for a day... after that we would probably both lose our minds!
As you can see, Avi wouldn't cooperate that evening and I'm sure Uncle Will decided after our short visit that he is very happy just being an uncle for a long time to come!  We love you Will!!

Who Are You??

I'm always curious who reads this.  I just put a counter on, so I know quite a few, but WHO??  I find other people's blogs so fascinating.  Not sure why.  To them I'm sure it's just the day to day normal stuff, but to me that is what is so interesting!  It's OK if you don't want to admit you are reading this right now.  I read many blogs of people I've never even met before.  I know, I'm strange and a kind of a stalker.  I find blogs to be a fun way of learning about people I love and especially about people I might never get to know in real life.  I love trying to figure people out. Maybe that's why I went into psychology?  Anyway, we are off today (for all of you who care ;)) to a playgroup and then time for some serious laundry folding (laundry seems to be my biggest issue these days)!

Mother's Day

Was wonderful, relaxing and a perfect day.  We met my mom and step-dad for a little hike and picnic in the canyon.  The kids did great and had a blast playing  playing in the creek and running around barefoot.  Soren actually did the majority of the hike barefoot and about half of it on all fours as our puppy :-)  (they want a dog REALLY bad).  My mom and I sat in the shade with Aviana while the boys played and caught bugs.  The air was warm with a cool breeze and the smell of all of the new spring leaves down by the water was delicious.  It really was the perfect Mother's Day, although my mom and I said that as soon as the kids are old enough we are taking a girl's spa weekend instead!  Wish I had pictures of the day since it was so pretty, but I forgot my camera of all things.  Guess what else I forgot???  DIAPERS!  Yes, diapers.  I did not have even one!  What was I thinking?  We get there and Avi is already soaked and I have absolutely nothing.  My mom had bought me these cute dish towels and I was really thinking I'd have to test their absorbency out that day on Avi's little rear!  My step-dad saw a family with a little baby across the parking lot and fortunately was able to bum one off them and fortunately God was on my side that day and Avi did not poop at all until we got home, which never happens.  The girl is a poop machine! I was so embarrassed though, being that I have had three kids and forget a diaper??  And of course we are in the middle of nowhere and can't just go buy some.  I learned my lesson.  NEVER assume there are actual diapers in the diaper bag.
On a lighter note, today I had lunch at a fabulous new place in town called Pita Jungle... SO GOOD and healthy too.  I could eat it for every meal.  Seriously, today I think might have Michael pick it up again for dinner.

Firsts

Avi's first time out of pj's!  1 month old, we figured it was finally time to play dress up a little.
Two of my most favorite gentlmen.
Avi loved (well, tolerated) her first hike in the red rocks.
hmmm....
